RR FACTS

Technical data of RR Silver Shadow
Revealed to the public for the first time in London (Earls Court) Motor Show in October 1965, the Silver
Shadow was quickly appreciated for the revolution in Rolls-Royce motor car design that it represented.
It was a total and irrevocable break with the past.

TECHNICAL DATA OF THE SILVER SHADOW
Engine : 8cylinder 90 degree V-configuration, aluminium-silicon alloy cylinder block with cast iron wt cylinder liners bore x stroke 104.14 x 99.06mm (4.1 x 3.6 in), engine capacity 6,750cc; (720hps at 2300 rpm) (Petrol consumption max. 16.5 ltr. 100 km) aluminium alloy cylinder heads, SU-carburettors; 3 speed automatic gearbox; independent suspension with coil springs front and rear, hydraulic self-leveling height control front and rear; disk brakes front and rear; wheel base 3,136.9mm.

The extremely rigid monocoque body was of advanced design for the day. Front and rear sub-frames, which are attached to the body by resilient metal mounts, carry the engine, gearbox and independent suspension is provided on all four wheels by coil springs.
Automatic height control is fitted, which ensures constant riding height whatever the load.
The highly successful 6230cc, eight cylinder aluminium engine which powered the Silver Shadow and T-Series Bentley was fitted with redesigned cylinder heads to give even greater efficiency. The improved fully automatic transmission, with electrically operated gear selection gave smooth gear changes throughout the four forward gears and reverse.

The Character of the Silver Shadow series was very modern. The development of the Silver Shadow broke new ground and broke away from the many design principles. The new models were technically striking in three ways : a monocoque chassis was used, all wheels had separate springs and four wheel disc brakes with double callpers now ensured exact stopping even under difficult circumstances. In 2001 the system is still unsurpassed by European Luxury cars.

The Silver Shadow was destined to become combined with the very similiar Bentley T models, the most successful cars in the history of Rolls-Royce company. There were 20,605 Silver Shadows built for the worldwide market.
